ভিক্টোরিয়া মেমোরিয়াল সত্যি কী কল্লোলিনী তিলোত্তমা কলকাতার 330 তম জন্মদিন আজ! না আমার এমনটা মনে হয় না। জব চার্নকের আগমনের সময় থেকে এতগুলি বছর পেরিয়ে জীবন্ত ইতিহাসের সাক্ষী হয়ে রয়েছে কলকাতা। 1690 সালের 24 অগস্ট এক মেঘলা দিনে কলকাতার মাটিতে পা রেখেছিলেন ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানির আমলা জব চার্নক। জব চার্নক সেই দিনটি পালিত হয়ে আসছে কলকাতার জন্মদিন হিসাবে। তবে আমি আজ দিনটি কে কলকাতার জন্মদিনের থেকে জব চার্নকের কলকাতায় আগমনের 330 বছর বলতে পারি। কারণ জব চার্নকের মৃত্যুর 5 বছর পরে সাবর্ণ রায়চৌধুরী বংশের 5 জন জমিদারের কাছ থেকে কলকাতার তিনটি গ্রামের প্রজাস্বত্ত্ব কেনে ইস্ট ইণ্ডিয়া কোম্পানি 1698 সালের 10 নভেম্বর। তাহলে কলকাতার নির্মাণে জব চার্নকের ভূমিকা কী ? এই প্রশ্ন ওঠা স্বাভাবিক। পরবর্তী সময়ে কলকাতা হাইকোর্ট 5 জন ঐতিহাসিকের উপরে ভার দেন, কলকাতার জন্মদিনের গুজব পরীক্ষা করে দেখতে। সেই পাঁচজন ঐতিহাসিক হলেন, অধ্যাপক নিমাই সাধন বোস, অধ্যাপক বরুণ দে, অধ্যাপক প্রদ্বীপ সিনহা অধ্যাপক অরুণকুমার দাসগুপ্ত অধ্যাপক সুশীল চৌধুরী এই বিশিষ্ট ঐতিহাসিকেরা তাঁদের রিপোর্টে বলেন, কলকাতার প্রতি
